Thermal Blinds For That Extra Layer Of Insulation
Window blinds are not normally thought of as insulators in a home; mostly Roman shades and Venetian blinds as well as other types of shades are there to do a practical job of keep bright sun out on hot days, plus maybe add a décor effect which is positive in the same way fabric curtains can be. However there is another specific type of blind which does focus on the insulation aspect: thermal blinds are intended to help keep heat in during colder days and nights, as well as keep sun out on warm days when the sunlight can be too much and make a room unbearably hot.
Can thermal blinds actually help with the energy efficiency of you home by lowering the leakage of heat from a warm room? There are a variety of issues that need to be taken into account to work out if the extra cost of thermal blinds can be justified on an energy efficiency and value for money basis. Much depends on what the current situation is with the room in terms of type of windows and insulation; if you already have efficient double glazed windows with no draughts, then the chances are there is little scope to reduce heat loss beyond what the existing curtains might do.
On the other hand if you have inefficient single glazed windows, then thermal blinds may help to make the room more comfortable and reduce heat loss. Even then, that heat loss reduction will depend further on how good are the thermal qualities of the blinds you are considering; that varies a lot. If you are using them in effect as an alternative to secondary double glazing, then the blinds need to be close fitting to avoid drafts, for the very same reasons that secondary glazing has to have a close fit with an insulation gap of air between the second window or blind and the single glazed window exposed to the elements.

Internal thermal window blinds are especially useful in a conservatory which tends to have a chill in the winter that prevents you from using it as often as you’d like. A well insulated conservatory can be a useful extra room in which you can relax. If the rest of the family is watching television and you want to listen to music, then thermal indoor window blinds throughout the conservatory may help reduce that chill. Choose a warm design and you will at least get the psychological benefit of feeling warmer. |
